Report: Five states account for 90% of Lassa fever cases in Nigeria in 2025

The National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has revealed that five states, including Taraba, Ebonyi, Edo, Ondo, and Bauchi, have recorded 90% of all confirmed cases of Lassa fever in Nigeria since the beginning of 2025.

The NCDC revealed this in its latest Epidemiological Week 21 report, which was published on its website on Sunday.

According to the agency, Nigeria has recorded 739 confirmed Lassa fever cases and 141 deaths, resulting in a case fatality ratio (CFR) of 19.1%. When compared with the figures from this time last year, it represents a 1% increase 18.1% CFR reported during that period.

Nigeria has recorded 141 deaths in 2025, with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 19.1%. Ondo Stare reported 30% of total confirmed infections, followed by Bauchi, Edo, Taraba and Ebonyi, which recorded 25%, 16%, 16% and 3% respectively.

Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba and Ebonyi have recorded 224, 185, 121 and 116 cases respectively. Other states that reported confirmed cases are Kogi, Gombe, Plateau, Benue and Nasarawa with 15, 14, 13, 11 and 5 cases respectively.

On the other hand, Kaduna, Enugu, Delta, Cross River, Borno, Ogun, Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory recorded the lowest confirmed cases in the country. Kaduna and Enugu recorded three cases, Delta and Cross River States both recorded two confirmed cases, while Borno, Ogun, FCT and Anambra all recorded one case each.

The agency further noted that no healthcare worker was affected in the reported period.

“Notably, no healthcare workers were affected during the latest reporting week. However, 22 healthcare workers have been infected so far in 2025,” the agency noted.
