NAFDAC destroys N1 trillion worth of fake drugs in Anambra

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed dangerous drugs confiscated in Anambra and Abia states. The drugs worth over N1trillion were destroyed at the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) dump-site in Awka, Awka South Local Council of Anambra State.

Director General of the agency, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the Zonal Director of Operations, South East, Dr Martin’s Iluyomade disclosed that the unwholesome drugs were mopped up from Aba and Onitsha drug markets.

According to her, the exercise was in line with the agency’s mandate of eradicating fake and spurious regulated products and to stop them from circulating in the country.

“The drugs were seized through diligent efforts of regulatory and enforcement officers in the zone, who worked tirelessly to mop up and confiscate the products within 0ne month of raids in the markets.

“We as an agency have come to realise that the time has come to put once and for all an end to circulation of substandard and falsified medicines in Nigeria. We are working in such a way that Nigerians can go to bed and sleep and that whatever medicine that is available is safe, certified and effective,” she said.

She assured that the agency would continue to strengthen regulatory frameworks and enhance surveillance, insisting that lives were properly protected from harmful drugs and products.

The DG appealed to the public to join NAFDAC in the fight against counterfeit, fake drugs and other regulated products by reporting unscrupulous people who engage in illicit practices for prompt investigation.

Earlier, the Deputy Director, Enforcement and Investigation, Tunji Omoyemi, disclosed that raids were carried out at the drug markets and shops, which led to the seizure of several unregistered, expired, regulated and falsified drugs, including Tramadol and Analgin.
